1,100 workers have lost their lives in Mombasa port, report shows

 Victims of ship accidents at the port of Mombasa have narrated how they were disabled on vessels. Some of the victims are on wheelchairs while other are nursing injuries in their homes in various parts of Coast. Mr Hussein Ali Zenje is on a wheelchair after he suffered a broken left leg and right arm while working on mv Star Zeta at berth number 11 at the port of Mombasa. Speaking yesterday at his home in Mtongwe, Mombasa County, Mr Zenje said he was working on October 9, this year, when he fell on a ship hatch.

“Two of us were on the scaffold (kind of ladder) cleaning the hatches of the ship using pressure pumps from a compressor when it suddenly fell down. We were lucky to have survived,” said Zenje. The father of three said he become unconscious and found himself at the Mewa Hospital where he was discharged on October 18. He said having worked with a ship contractor since 2005, life has been tough after the accident since he has no income. Mr Athman Bakari Korera, his colleague who also fell from the scaffold on the fateful night, said he fell on his back and injured his spinal cord. Speaking from his Denyenye home in Kwale County yesterday, Korera said he also lost consciousness during the accident although he could now walk. The father of five who was admitted for four days has worked for the ship contractor for more than 10 years as a casual.
