Housekeeper accused of raping tourist in Diani

A case in which an employee of a beach resort in Diani was charged with allegedly raping a tourist was yesterday postponed after a Kwale court disqualified the interpreter.
Resident magistrate Abdulrahman Aminga disqualified the interpreter after the court found out she had played a role in the New Year Day incident.
Charles Kibegwa Ochieng 21, a room steward at Diani Sea Resort Hotel is accused of committing the offence. His case is being heard in the magistrate’s chamber after an application by the tourist’s lawyer Timothy Njeru to hear the matter privately.
The magistrate was forced to stop the case after learning that the translator, Aukse Karanauskaite is a friend of the victim.Aukse is also alleged to have brought the rape victim -- Inga Puckoriute, 25 -- her medicine to clear a hangover after a night out.
“The translator played a role which is quite crucial. I don’t find it appropriate to use her services,” said Aminga. He directed the prosecution to seek the services of another translator.
Puckoriute, a Lithuanian national and a Dutch resident, said the accused had gone to take some tissue paper rolls in her room at 11.00am.
The case will be heard on January 11 since the tourist will be leaving the country on January 13.Ochieng who is unrepresented is out on a Sh50,000 bond.
